HEAL Romania works to improve the lives and the future of vulnerable children in Bucharest, Romania. For children the poorest children, we have our family project. We provide food, education, medical assistance and in some cases housing. Children living in orphanages are very behind in their education and have little contact with the outside world. We provide an education programme to ensure that these children remain in school and pass their exams. Our final project is a social integration project to equip the children to look after themselves once they leave the orphanages as young adults.

This would be a place where vulnerable children could visit to be provided with food, a safe space to play, help with school work and learn the social skills to enable them to cope with the outside world. It would also be a place for parents to come for advice about parenting, education and how they can access financial support from government initiatives.

HEAL Romania cares for individual and family cases. This may mean we simply provide food and clothes for very poor families. Parents that are genuinely trying to provide a better life for their family, we assist with building materials, access to jobs and government grants and assistance with legal paperwork. The charity works through the needs of the child and their family until the case is resolved. An example might be extending or improving housing to provide adequate living space, enrolling the child into a school and after school care programme or helping the parents to find a job. Once the child and family is settled, the case is closed and a new family or child case is considered.
Our primary focus is to help children living in orphanages to catch up in their education and stay in school for as long as possible. The children have missed a lot schooling and have fallen behind. Our educators do a fabulous job at keeping these children engaged in their education to allow them to pass their exams and gain the necessary qualifications to find decent work. Our educators support their schoolwork with extra Maths, Romanian, English and History lessons and also ensure that homework is completed correctly. We currently attend three different orphanages in Bucharest and also assist in a village outside of Bucharest called Valae Popului.
The children living in orphanages have very limited contact with the outside world, other than attending school. Many of these children have rarely visited the park, the cinema, to a restaurant and have no idea of what it is like to be part of a family. At the weekends, our educators take small groups of children out of the orphanages for the day on a rota basis. They might take them to the park, out for a meal or take them to their home to learn the guitar or to cook or just to spend time in a family home. The children really look forward to these visits and benefit greatly from spending time with a family that cares about them.
