I would like to thank all of our sponsors and supporters for helping us have such a fantastic 2009. There were several visits to Romania, including a crucial visit to talk to the mayor. The meeting began with him telling us that he definitely would not be able to help us find a building. However, with Ana Doina’s excellent powers of persuasion he soon came on board and the meeting ended with him offering us a building! At present we are waiting for the decision to be agreed by the local council.
Mariana
Mariana used to live with her husband and three children in a wooden shack hidden in a field. Eventually we found a woman who had two spare rooms in her house that were very run down. After a lot of renovations the family moved in at the end of the summer. The family are very happy here. Her husband, Ionut, was arrested for non payment of taxes and imprisoned for three years. Recently HEAL Romania have managed to find her a job cleaning a house for £20 per month. We will continue to visit them every week to take food and medicine.
Sluser Family
There are 7 members in the Sluser family and last year they all lived in one room. In the summer they built an extra room and the kitchen with the help of HEAL Romania. Thanks to the kind donations for my birthday, the family also now have electricity! All of her children are healthy and happy. They want to say thank you because they enjoy the milk that they get from us. For the past few months HEAL Romania have been searching for a job fer Mr Sluser. He has now been given a temporary contract. He must prove himself in order to keep the position.
Circiumaru Family
Mrs Circumaru has been very ill and has had to be hospitalised several times last year. Her son dropped out of school after an argument with a teacher. HEAL Romania has been trying to find a place in another school for him and to help the family out while Mrs Circumaru recovers. We are also in the process of applying for the relevant documents so the she can have access to her pension money.
Popa Family
Laurentu lives with his alcoholic grandparents and six other members of the extended family in two rooms. His parents are in prison but Ana Doina takes him to visit them. HEAL Romania has been able to sort out his grandmother documents so that she can apply for her pension. We have also paid for Laurentu to visit the dentist and have urgent dental treatment.
Building
In October I went to Bucharest to meet with the mayor. He is willing to give us a disused kindergarten on a 20 year contract. The building needs no major repairs and has electricity and running water. There is a play area next to the building and land for football pitches. The mayor has also agreed to allow us to build on the surrounding land. HEAL Romania has written a proposal to the mayor that he has accepted. It now has to be accepted by the local council before the documents go to court to be made legal.
